Walter Steimel Sr., age 87, a resident at the St. Francis Nursing Home, died Saturday, February 27, 2010. Walter was born March 18, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA the son of Gustave J. and Helena Green Steimel. A graduate of John Bartram High School, Walter's nickname was the "Professor". On October 24, 1942 he married Helen Tickell in Philadelphia. Walter served during World War II in the U.S. Army as an x-ray technician. After being discharged he was awarded membership into Patriotic Order Sons of America. He was employed with J.B. Slevin Inc, Lansdowne, PA, and later by Color Process Company, Conshohocken, PA, as a steel rule dye maker for corrugated containers. Walter also was a member of the Pennsylvania's SPEBSQSA - Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. Walter enjoyed tinkering around the house, built his own television in the late 1940's, flew a World War II training plane at the age of 86, and was a amateur Ham radio operator with the call letters K3RRV. He took great care of his loving wife, Helen, for 68 years. During his life, Walter lived in the Philadelphia area until retiring to Tucson, AZ for 20 years. The past 3 years he and his wife lived in Fond du La, WI to be near family.A brother and seven sisters preceded Walter in death. SURVIVORS: include his wife Helen L. Steimel, a resident of the St. Francis Nursing Home, three sons; Walter (Maileen) Steimel, Jr., Exton, PA, Robert (Suzanne) Steimel, Bay City, MI, William (Dawn) Steimel, Fond du Lac,WI, ten grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren, nieces; Ruth Mallek, Norfolk, VA and Edith Ann Stetser, Chicago, IL.
