William H. Toomey passed away peacefully on April 24, 2014 at the Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac. He was 88 years old. Mr. Toomey was born on October 13, 1925 in St. Louis, Mo. to James M. and Marion (Jones) Toomey. William graduated from Normandy High School in St. Louis in 1943 and promptly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was wounded on the Pacific island of Iwo Jima in 1945 and returned home from the war to attend college at the University of Missouri. He married Beatrice Roberts in 1951 and moved his family to Oakfield in 1955 where he became a teacher and coach in the Oakfield School District. He retired from teaching in 1987. He married Jean (Berry) Schiller in 1970. He was an active member in the Oakfield Lions Club and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest award given by the Lions Club International. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League Chapter in Fond du Lac.Mr. Toomey is survived by his four children: Patty (Jerry) Hoppe of Columbia, South Carolina; Mimi (Ken) Hoekstra of Waupun; Dan Toomey of New Berlin, WI and Sally Toomey (Scott Hendrix) of Houlton, WI: and step-children Chris Flemming of St. Louis, John Schiller and Carl Schiller. He has 13 grandchildren: Mitchell Hoppe, Amelia Hoppe, Emily (Pete) Whyte, Kurt (Kimberly) Hoekstra, Kyle Hoekstra, William Roberts, Evan Roberts, Jay Roberts, Kathleen Toomey, Sarah Toomey, Ben Schiller, Dan Schiller and Sean Flemming; and two great-grand children: Trinity Graves and Dayton Whyte. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean, brothers James Toomey of St. Louis, Robert Toomey of St. Louis and Gerald Toomey of Banning, Calif.
William's life will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 from 3:00 P.M. "“ 7:00 P.M. at the Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, 524 N. Park Ave. in Fond du Lac. Cremation has taken place and burial will follow at a later date in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. Additional information and guestbook can be found at www.ueckerwitt.com .
